The Sunnyside Guild was formed in 1920 by a small group of women devoted to bringing recreation to tuberculosis patients confined at the former Sunnyside Sanatorium. Guild members were actively involved with programs at the sanatorium until its closure in 1966. The pulmonary function lab was transferred to Wishard Memorial Hospital and Sunnyside Guild donated funds for the lab and new tuberculosis units. In 1977 Sunnyside Guild was instrumental in establishing the volunteer gift shop at Wishard by funding its construction and first inventory. Net profits from the gift shop are used for hospital improvements and nursing scholarships. Since 1966, Sunnyside Guild’s fundraising efforts have generated more that $1.2 million to benefit pulmonary programs and fellowships at Wishard.
Date Built: 1917

History:
Opened in 1917 near Oaklandon (now part of Indianapolis) as an outgrowth of the
pulmonary department of Wishard hospital. Sunnyside provided state of the art
care and treatment for tuberculosis patients. It continued in operation until
1969 when new treatments for tuberculosis made the hospital and it's treatments
obsolete. For a short time after closing, it held patients from the nearby VA
hospital.
